The Safeware Annual Conference 2008

Following our highly successful 2007 event, we are delighted to invite you to the Safeware Annual Conference 2008.

This full-day learning and networking event takes place on

Thursday, 28 February 2008 at the Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club.

The venue is ideally situated 10 minutes from both Birmingham International Airport and Birmingham International railway station and is easily accessible by road.

As deadlines close on REACh\GHS, we aim to present a balanced view of the next critical steps involved in companies own implementations.

How should these items be integrated into your Product Stewardship and best business practices?
Safeware will outline plans helping clients using its support program and future software development, including the launch of its own integrated solution REACh+.

We will once again be hosting a dinner event the night prior to the conference, and have secured a preferential room rate so that you can arrive at the conference next morning, without a long and tiring journey behind you.

Costs

Safeware clients, the cost per delegate on the night of 27 February is £280 + VAT, or you can attend the conference only at a cost of £240 + VAT.

For non-Safeware clients, the dinner, accommodation and conference package is £325 + VAT or you can attend the conference only at cost of £285 + VAT.

As in previous years, we expect demand to be high, so early booking is advised as there are only a limited number of places available.

We hope you will join us for this unique event and look forward to welcoming you to the Safeware Annual Conference 2008.

Guest Speakers and Presentations

The Safeware Annual Conference 2008 will bring together some of Industry’s leading experts offering insight and advice on the latest legislative, regulatory and implementation issues.

Bob Warner, Chemwise.
The new regime for REACh and GHS
Bob is principal of Chemwise Associates and the one of the UK’s leading expert on REACh, GHS, COSHH and CHIP. He is a member of Safeware’s REACh working group, and is one of the Principal Consultants for REACh Ready.

Bob will advise on a practical approach to REACh and GHS and how these should be integrated into your Product Stewardship and best business practices., This will include an update on the status of the seven REACh implementation projects (RIPs), and the resulting guidance.

Torben Madsen, DHI
RIP 3.2 Development of Exposure Scenarios
The most significant new requirement under REACh for chemical formulators inside the EU will be an “Annex” to the Safety Data Sheet to include Exposure Scenarios.
Torben Madsen from DHI is one of the principal consultants responsible for developing this guidance document for the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).

Torben will explain ‘What is an exposure scenario?’, ‘When is it needed?’
‘Who is responsible for it?’, ‘How can it be generated?’, ‘How is it communicated down the supply chain?’.

Mike Reale Ph.D IPSM
Globally Harmonised System (GHS) Implementation in the US
The EU implementation of GHS has now been drafted, deadlines have been set. Industry and Competent Authorities now face the learning curve of a new global system. This presentation will focus attention to how our US colleagues are coping with the same problems.

Responsibility for the regulation of chemicals in the US is shared among several agencies: OSHA for workplace chemicals; CPSC for consumer chemicals; EPA for pesticides and biocides; and, FDA for food and drugs. As a result, implementation of GHS is not straightforward. This presentation will discuss the implementation process in the US, and the status of implementation in the various agencies

Mike has worked in the chemical industry for 40 years, and for the last 20 years has been a consultant to this industry. He enjoys international recognition for his achievements in the fields of chemical regulation and product safety. Michael is co-author of Material Safety Data Sheets – The Writer’s Desk Reference, and has written several articles on hazard communication. He was a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication and a past chairman of its Program and Standards Review Committees. He belongs to the American Chemical Society and the National Fire Protection Association, and is a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. Michael earned his doctoral and master’s degrees in organic chemistry from Fordham University, and a B.S. in chemistry from St. Peter’s College.

Richard Elsmore , JSC International
Biocidal Products update
With so much emphasis on REACh it easy to overlook other important parts of parallel legislation like the Biocidal Products Regulations.

This presentation will include the obligations of downstream users (Formulators) selling products containing a biocide, a checklist of usable biocides and product registration with the NPIS (National Poisons Information Service)

Richard joined JSC in 2005, bringing with him 20 years’ experience of working within the biocide industry, in senior roles with both active ingredient manufacturers and formulators.

Desmond Waight, DanGoods Training and Consultancy
Impacts of Transport Regulation Changes in 2009
2009 will see significant changes to IMDG Code, ADR, RID and the new British Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009.

This presentation will cover the most significant changes to Safeware’s clients including

  • Change in the requirements for the provision of Emergency Instructions in writing

  • New criteria & marking requirements for environmentally hazardous by sea/road/rail

  • New “Exempted Quantity Packages” in addition to those for “Limited Quantity Packages”

  • Extension of the requirement to appoint a DGSA to those companies whose staff are involved in unloading dangerous goods from an orange plated transport unit

For those that can absorb a little extra! News will also be available on 2011 possible changes.

Desmond Waight founded DanGoods Training and Consultancy in 1999, after 26 years involvement in hazardous goods issues with 3M United Kingdom PLC.

Henk Van Peski – Van Peski Consultancy
GHS/REACh Whats happening in other global markets.
The worldwide implementation of GHS based on the “Purple Book” proceeds at a variety of speeds, with different levels of “Harmonisation” depending on your global location. Henk provides an overview of the status in key global markets and evaluates how these differences may hamper a “True Globally Harmonised System”

After years of discussion, REACh the EU system of chemicals management has been introduced in all 27 member states of the European Union.
But, unlike the general thought, that REACh is just an EU system, there is a global tendency to copy parts of the system into legislation in other countries, (Canada, Australia and USA). An overview will be given on the developments of these changes, that eventually might have a huge effect on national notification, registration, restrictions and banning of chemicals.

Drs. AC.H. (Henk) van Peski graduated in physical chemistry at the State University Utrecht in The Netherlands. Over 45 years experience in the HSE field, he retired in 2004 from the position of Director of Environmental, Health & Safety Affairs EU/Af/As/Au of Kodak Polychrome Graphics. Henk was chairman of the EPCI of CEFIC (now EPIA),

He still participates in the Working Group Substances Policy of the Dutch Chemical Industry Association VNCI, DUCC-EU working group, EPIA and CIPHO-VCI meetings. He contributes to a chemical reference book, “Chemiekaarten”, and acts as Chief Editor for “Journaal Stoffen en Preparaten (Journal of Chemicals Management).”

In 2005, the Queen of The Netherlands honoured him with a knighthood in the Order of Orange-Nassau, due to his pioneering work regarding environmental and safety policy and labour conditions in the photochemical industry.

Safeware Team
Launch of Safeware's REACh Module
REACh+ is the first in a series of modules from Safeware to help companies comply with the REACh regulations. REACh+ is a chemical inventory analysis tool, specifically designed to help both registrants (M/I) and downstream users (DU).

Safeware will reveal its strategy for developing new/enhanced modules to enable companies to effectively and logically implement the regulations.

Safeware’s solution will have an emphasis on practical implementations of IT and how this can be further integrated into the EU’s own REACh IT software systems, some of which are currently under development.
